Canadians gambled $13,75 billion on gambling operations in 2009, compared with $13.67 billion the year before.
According to Statistics Canada, in 2009 casinos accounted for 34 percent of the net revenue from the gambling industry, lotteries accounted for 26 percent, up from 24 in 2008, slot machines outside casinos accounted for 21 percent, down from 22, and the video lottery terminals accounted for 19 percent, down from 20.
In 2008, profits from gambling totaled nearly $6.7 billion, or 4.7% of all provincial revenues. Saskatchewan and Alberta were the two regions where the average household spending on gambling was very high, registered at $720, respectively $645. In 2008, the lowest average household spending on gambling registered in Quebec at $390.
